Juncus Gerardii (Saltmeadow Rush)
Saltmeadow rush (or blackgrass) is a native perennial from 12” to 30” in height. It forms dense, carpet-like stands from extensive, long-creeping rhizomes. Unlike dioecious species, it is monoecious, producing tiny, dark brown to blackish flowers clustered at the tips of its rigid, erect stems. It is widespread across coastal regions, most commonly found in the high marsh zones of tidal estuaries and brackish wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
Great for use in wetland restoration and shoreline stabilization projects. The extensive rhizomatous root networks of saltmeadow rush act as a physical filter between the water and the shore, holding coastal sediments in place while intercepting pollutants, excess nutrients, and runoff water. It is highly adapted to brackish environments and saturated, high-marsh soils.
